Welcome to the thirtieth issue of Black Girl Perfume Club! Let’s dive right in.
Happy Halloween, gorgeous. I’m a huge girly girl. I mean, huge. I love all things pink, soft and frilly. If it has Hello Kitty on it, I want it. I always ask, “do you have that in pink?” I’m a Barbie girl in a Barbie world. But not many people know that I kinda have an inner goth.
She loves vampires, scary movies, heavy metal and shiny black leather. I let her out to play pretty often, like juxtaposing a Korn tee with a tutu or layering a black leather jacket with a lace dress and Doc Martens (it’s giving Bride of Chucky now that I think about it). When I combine my dark side and my girly side, I’m looking to find a unique energy—the dark feminine.
I’m not talking about anything ghoulish or devilish, but rather a femme fatale. She’s gorgeous, mysterious and afraid of nothing and no one. I’m thinking of Rihanna or Angelina Jolie, compared to the lighter feminine of Beyoncé and Margot Robbie. Catch my drift?
Hasina Jeelani of Vogue India describes dark feminine as “a woman might swap candy pastels for sultry noir ensembles, paint her lips in a devil-may-care shade of [deep red]…at work, this translates into being dominant, assertive and taking control in the boardroom—traits that have been inexplicably coded as masculine—but doing so in a sultry, feminine way.”
Read below for some fragrances that embody this unique and empowering feminine archetype.
